The Environment Group

Initially starting small, we now have a working group of around a dozen people, supported by nearly 100 volunteers, who get involved with a whole range of environmental activities around the village.

Our Environmental Activities to date

Establishing, developing and maintaining the 6 acre Long Sutton Nature Reserve, founded in early 2025
Running the annual Environment Day at the village hall which has covered nature, energy savings, recycling, green gardening etc
Planting trees along the side of the cricket pitch and on the village green
Giving out wildflower seeds and saplings to local residents
Making and putting up owl and bird boxes
Coordinating with the village Lengthsman to help manage the village in a more environmentally friendly way
Working with the wider network of environmental charities in Somerset to help share knowledge
Applying for and deploying grants to help improve the village
The group does include members of the Parish Council which funds some of the activities but it has more members who are residents of the village and just want to get involved.

Why Get Involved?

Volunteers tell us that they like to get involved because:

It’s a great way to meet neighbours with shared interests
It can be great exercise, physically and mentally
They enjoy getting their hands dirty
They like taking steps to save money, protect the environment and improve the village now and for future generations
